WHAT TO EXPECT

My job is to fully assess each animal individually.

All animals have to be referred to me by your veterinarian, alternatively you will need to obtain written or verbal agreement from your veterinarian for the treatment of your horse. Please click to download the WAIVER document.

My visit starts with a little bit of paperwork, first I will take your animal´s history, I usually ask about their diet, their daily routine, any concerns you might have, the reason of my visit. The next step is a static assessment where I observe your animal standing and interacting with you and the environment. I look at their body in stance, temper, conformation and overall condition. Following is the dynamic assessment, this is where the fun begins. I observe the horses natural movements, I might ask you to show me a few basic ground exercises just to see how your horse moves in certain positions. Regarding your concerns I might ask you to show me your horse under saddle or being lunged. Next is the palpation. This is where I look for physical restrictions, changes and quality of the coat, hooves and feet, muscle spasm, tension, pain, swelling, etc.… Based on all those assessments I will proceed with the treatment. The treatment itself is individual to the needs of your animal and my findings.

This whole session can take from 1-1 ½ hours. If your animal is in need of rehabilitation, a specifically tailored rehabilitation plan will be sent to you via email. In the meantime I will show you corrective exercises, massage techniques and suggest environmental changes to improve your animals health.

Does my horse need physiotherapy?

Every horse will benefit from physiotherapy. But the treatment won’t always be the same. No matter if your horse performs as an athlete, trail buddy or a pasture ornament, carrying out a routine assessment is recommended for all horses, helping to detect small problems early. Ensuring that your horse is pain free and has a good range of movement is important to allow them to live a happy and healthy life. Physiotherapy helps to reduce pain and swelling and improve movement and function of the patient. A number of different techniques are used, including massage, hot and cold treatments, hydrotherapy, laser, pulsed magnetic field therapy (PMFT), myofascial release, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), joint mobilizations and prescribed exercises to increase range of motion, strengthen muscles and improve balance and coordination.
